What is The Crowd Versus?

The Crowd Versus is the crowdfunding platform for legal actions against irresponsible companies and governments worldwide. By collectively raising money for targeted legal action, we can withstand their disproportional power.

We, together with you, are here to help nonprofits fund their lawsuits and other legal actions against conglomerates. These actions are pursued on behalf of a community or ecosystem.

Is The Crowd Versus a nonprofit organization?

The Crowd Versus was founded March 10, 2014, as a nonprofit foundation under Dutch law. The Dutch Tax Administration has designated The Crowd Versus to be a “Public Benefit Organization” (PBO, or in Dutch: Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling, ANBI). PBOs are offered a number of tax advantages:

  • A PBO does not pay Dutch inheritance tax or gift tax on inheritances.
  • A PBO does not pay Dutch gift tax on gifts that the institution makes for the general good.
  • Natural and legal persons making donations to a PBO may deduct their gifts from their Dutch income tax or corporate income tax.

In compliance with the Dutch ANBI regulations, all members of the Executive Board and the Advisory board receive no income other than expense reimbursements. The operational leaders are paid a modest management fee within the lower ranges of the Dutch renumeration norms for the public sector.

Which costs will be deducted from my donation?
The fundraising nonprofits behind the case of your choice will receive all donations after deduction of a 5% project fee (which includes all payment fees) and a 15% campaign fee to cover all cost to promote the case via various communication channels.

Why do I need to provide data when I make a payment at The Crowd Versus?
For online payments it is required by EU law (the Know Your Customer regulations to prevent fraud, cybercrime and terrorist funding) that The Crowd Versus registers your first name, your last name, your email address, and your country of residence. We use your data in compliance with EU laws on privacy, please read our Privacy Policy.

Who can start a The Crowd Versus project?
If your nonprofit wants a case to be crowdfunded through The Crowd Versus, it needs to prove its financial credibility by a track record of cost-effective spending on successful projects and represent a professional and transparent financial organization. A detailed cost specification of the fundraising target budget should also be included.

The legal action itself needs to meet the following criteria:

  • If successful, creates a major positive impact on social, environmental or economic justice on a local, regional and global level for current or future generations
  • Feasible
  • Embedded in a lifecycle
  • Knowledgeable counsel is retained for this legal action
  • Aimed at measurable and time-bound results
  • Part of a grass roots movement starting with an individual or small group of individuals – either victims or activists – standing up against a powerful party that is clearly involved in an unjust practice.

Only when your case meets these criteria, can we guarantee the crowd that all donations will be used for their intended purpose.
